The recent rise in margin debt in the US stock market is beginning to flash an ominous danger signal. When interest rates are low and volatility much reduced, as they have been for most of the period since the global financial crisis, it is hardly surprising that speculative and leveraged trading in securities has been on the increase - the two invariably go hand in hand.
