The historian Robert Skidelsky, biographer of Keynes, has come down firmly in favour of the view that there is no way that Vladimir Putin can succeed in obtaining his objectives in the Ukraine and beyond, however popular his current aggressive posturing has made him at home. The reason, Prof Skidelsky says in a recent comment piece for Project Syndicate, is simply a function of power and economics:
