Notebook: reflections on the UK election

So the election result is in, with the pundits and pollsters confounded yet again. The UK now has a government of sorts, but one that has signally failed to deliver the strong negotiating mandate on Brexit that Mrs May wanted but failed to achieve with her disastrous, clunky campaign. Now that she is beholden to an emboldened Cabinet, we may never find out now what it was that she really thought would have been an acceptable outcome to her hardline Brexit negotiation strategy.
